Zhouzhuang village is in southwest of Kunshan, Jiangsu Province,
and is bordered by the Baixian, Dianshan and Nanhu lakes. The village
has a 1,000-year history. In 1086 during the Northern Song Dynasty,
Zhou Di, a court gentleman responsible for evaluations, built this
village. All the residential houses and shops are next to water
and most of the buildings were built in the Ming and Qing dynasties.
In the village there are 10 stone arch bridges; two of them, the
Shide Bridge and the Yongan Bridge were built in the period 1573-1620,
during the reign of Ming Emperor Wanli.
